Emmanuel Macron: The "Top of the Class" Syndrome

3 min read

Since his election as President of France, Emmanuel Macron has become an emblematic figure of a deeply ingrained sociological phenomenon in French mentality: suspicion and criticism toward those perceived as the "top of the class." Despite his rigorous management of public affairs, tireless energy, and notable successes under challenging circumstances, Macron is often the target of harsh, sometimes unfounded criticisms. How can we explain this dissonance between the results of his presidency and public perception?

A Tireless and Competent Worker

Emmanuel Macron is known for his intense work ethic. Often working late into the night and sleeping only four hours a night, he is recognized for his mastery of complex issues and his commitment to keeping his electoral promises. During his presidency, France has faced several major crises with notable resilience: from the Yellow Vest protests to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the management of the war in Ukraine. In the latter, Macron has made considerable diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict and protect Ukraine, playing a more active mediation role than most other global leaders.

Social and Economic Reforms

Contrary to the often-circulated image of a "president of the rich," Macron has implemented policies aimed at improving social and economic conditions for all. Under his government, France’s attractiveness has increased, jobs have been created, and unemployment has decreased. He has sought to reform the country without raising taxes, preferring to stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities. His efforts to modernize the French economy and support the most vulnerable, although sometimes unpopular, aim to provide sustainable solutions rather than short-term populist measures.

The Target of Criticism: An Unexplained Hostility?

Despite these efforts and successes, Macron faces growing hostility. The Benalla affair, for example, marked a turning point in his presidency, crystallizing criticisms and fueling distrust towards him. This phenomenon of rejection seems exacerbated by a latent jealousy toward the "top of the class" — a figure who, in France, often provokes a form of resentment. Macron's straightforwardness, direct manner of speaking, and reformist stance are seen by some as arrogant, reinforcing an image of disconnection from the everyday concerns of citizens.

The Impact of Social Media and Fake News

Social media plays a crucial role in spreading this hostility. Fake news, amplified by platform algorithms, exacerbates divisions and fuels a negative perception of the president. Foreign interference, using these same channels to sow discord, also contributes to this distorted image. This phenomenon is not new in France: François Hollande, towards the end of his term, also faced virulent hatred, as did Nicolas Sarkozy before him. However, the intensity and violence of the criticisms toward Macron seem to reach unprecedented heights, despite largely positive results.

A Society Resistant to Reforms?

The question arises: why such rejection toward a president who has largely kept his promises and achieved tangible progress? Part of the answer lies in a certain French reluctance toward reforms, perceived as threatening a social model to which citizens are deeply attached. Additionally, the image of a competent leader and "top of the class" can provoke a form of distrust or jealousy, exacerbated by a tradition of dissent and criticism in France.

Conclusion

The "top of the class" syndrome affecting Emmanuel Macron reveals an inherent tension between public expectations and the realities of power. Despite notable economic and social successes, and crisis management that could have bolstered his popularity, Macron faces persistent criticism. This phenomenon is amplified by the influence of social media, the spread of false information, and a national culture that can be hostile to reforms. As France prepares for the next elections, it remains to be seen whether Macron’s achievements will eventually be recognized or if the persistent rejection of his persona will outweigh his accomplishments.
